A group of human rights organizations sent a letter to the Independent Expert on the Situation of Human Rights in Haiti, Gustavo Gallon.
The letter summarizes the continued effect of the devastation caused by Hurricane Matthew and offers suggestions for effective assistance. Most of the information used in the report comes from direct input from communities impacted by the hurricane.
“As you know, Haiti’s disproportionate vulnerability to disasters is a result of underlying human rights violations that must be addressed in order for the humanitarian response to be effective. We respectfully urge you to encourage the Haitian government and the international community to adopt a rights-based approach to Hurricane Matthew relief and reconstruction.”
